Whether you have tile on your floor, your back splash, or in your shower, keeping it clean is not as difficult as it may seem. With a bit of know-how, you can keep your tile looking new for years. Use these tips to keep your tile clean and sanitary.

1. Remove Debris Regularly

If you have tile floors, keep them swept to remove loose dirt and debris. If the tile is in your shower, there are several products on the market that you simply spray on when your shower is done. Wipe down your back splash with a damp cloth once a week. When you do these things, you do not have to perform major cleaning as often.

2. Know Your Tile

Know what your tile is made of. This will help you determine which cleaners to use. Porcelain and ceramic tiles can stand up to harsher chemicals than natural stone tiles can. Whether or not your tile is sealed will make a different in the cleansers that you are able to use as well. Make sure that you are using cleaning products that are intended for the specific type of tile in your home.

3. Get to Know Dirt

If there are tiles are in your kitchen, you will most likely be dealing with grease. If the tile is in your bathroom, soap scum will be your enemy. Tile floors battle dirt and debris from shoes and feet. Purchase cleaning products that are made for the specific type of dirt that you are trying to remove from your tile. If you really are not sure, an all-purpose cleaner or a mixture of borax detergent and water should do the trick.

4. Prevention

It is easiest to clean when there is not much dirt. If the tiles are on your floor, put mats on the inside and outside of your entry door. These mats will trap dirt and debris before it can enter your home. If your shower surround is made of tile, be sure to spray it down with hot water before you get out of the shower to rinse away soap before it has a chance to build up.

5. Grout

When you are considering how to keep your tile clean, do not forget about the grout. Dirty grout will make your tiles look dingy no matter how clean they are. Be careful with the cleanser you choose for your grout. If it is not safe for your type of tile, do not use it. There is a good chance that you will get some cleanser on your tile no matter how careful you are.

Cleaning tile does not have to be a tremendous chore. Follow these tips to keep your tile looking like you just had it installed. Perform a small amount of work frequently to avoid a major amount of work later.
